I forgot to mention:
If you would rather start out small before tackling a full-on garden, experiment with a back porch herb garden.  Select 4-6 herbs that you enjoy and will use in your cooking.  I like to use Bonnie Peat Pot Herbs because they are super convenient. You do not have to take the herb out of the pot to replant! My herb garden consists of Chive, Cilantro, Rosemary, Basil, Dill, and Sage. Some other popular herbs are Thyme, Fennel, Parsley, Mint, Oregano, and Catnip. (For all you cat people. Ugh.)
Pot the Herbs in cute pots, put in a sunny place, and Voila!
